Actions
Activities
The following activities are the main goals of the project.
A: Preliminary processing and management actions
B: Compensation for use of plots of land
C: Tangible conservation actions of species and habitat
D: Monitoring of actions;
E: Goals achieved
F: Coordination of the activities related to project and project monitoring meetings.
Each activity is divided into secondary section.
A1 – Individuation of appropriate area, feasibility studies on reintroduction and habitat mapping in Sardinia and in Corsica.
A2 – Preliminary, Definitive and final design – Signature of the agreements between project leader and associated partners - Studies on territorial and environmental characterization supporting Sites of Community Importance (SCI) - Preliminary, Definitive and final design according to management plans direct to remove threats and habitat conservation
A3 – Genetic study of animal life in Corsica and Sardinia – One of the most important risks for the conservation of Red Deer is the consanguinity and the consequent loss of genetic variability.
A4 – Education of monitoring staff - education of staff involved in monitoring activities of new population of Cervus elaphus corsicanus in Sardinia and in Corsica.
B1 - Compensation for use of plots of land – Purchasing of plots of land are not expected. There is a compensation for land property owner.
C1 - Infrastructures and fences – it will be realized seven fences and seven turrets for capture and temporary detention
C2 – Capture, marking and radio collar wearing – Capture, marking and radio collar wearing and health checks
C3 – Creation of new population in Sardinia and in Corsica – creation of new population through translocation in Sardinia and in Corsica
C4 – Creation of ecological corridors - It will be realized grasslands to obtain feeding of Red Deer.
C5 – Creation of troughs and meadows – In order to distance Red Deers from cultivated lands it will be realized troughs and meadows.
C6 – Realization of reflectors, light signals, installation of Red deer repelling devices
C7 – Environmental improvement acts – Forestry improvement acts
D1 – Periodic population and habitat monitoring – reintroduced animals will be regularly controlled starting from the release date.
D2 – Periodic health checks – the reintroduced deers will be captured for periodic health checks.
D3 – Data collection and analysis – data are collected and transmitted via GSM at elaboration centers where are used through GIS system
D4 – Monitoring of actions C4-C5-C6-C7
D5 – Socio-economic impact analysis in project areas
E1 – Communication plan and publicity materials – the web site of the project is the principal mean of communication.
E2 – Diffusion of the project and creation of a web site – This web site is based on two concepts: Transparency and participation
E3 – Meetings with local community
E4 – Importance of Awareness to schools
E5 – International convention on reintroduction of endangered animals of community interest
E6 – Installation of panels and billboards in the project’s areas
E7 – Importance of the project in socio-economic-tourist view
E8-E9 – Networking with other similar Life+ projects
The aim of this preliminary action is the elaboration of a feasibility study, which will identify the suitable areas where to apply the reintroduction and repopulation in Sardinia and Corsica; in order to maximize the operation possibilities’ of success to re-establish new populations of the Red Deer and the increase of the present ones.
In order to reduce the endogamy among individuals “related by blood” and to facilitate the increase of the genetic variability in the analyzed populations, the attention will be focused on genetic characteristics of the three main populations: Monte Arcuentu, Rio Piscinas (ITB040031) and Corsica.
The action includes the training of the staff involved in the monitoring of the new populations, created through translocation, of Cervus elaphus corsicanus in both Sardinia and Corsica.
The project does not involve the purchase of terrains but only the compensation to landowners, to realize the activities C4 and C5.
Seven paddocks and wood turrets will be realized to capture and hold the deer, in order to achieve the health monitoring and to observe the animals; three of these paddocks will be realized in the source area, the other paddocks of parking in the sites of release in Sardinia and Corse.
